The Great Burger Debate

July 12th, 2009 bohannon Posted in Dining, Summerlin, Uncategorized, las vegas Comments Off

As The Coffman Team, we are both family and co-workers.  And, most of the time, we get along pretty well.  But, there is an on-going disagreement that has split The Coffman Team in two – where is the best burger place in Las Vegas?

A Team LBS creation: A triple with egg, bacon and cheese. With onion rings. Just because the menu allows a creation like this, doesn't mean it should be done. Please create responsibly.

In one corner, we have Team Burger Bar.  The Burger Bar, located in the Mandalay Bay, lets you build the burger of your dreams.  Starting with your choice of meat (Angus or Kobe beef, turkey, lamb or veggie), you can add any topping you’ve ever thought of, and some you haven’t (anchovies? truffles?).  You even have a choice of fries (fat, skinny and sweet potato).  The members of Team Burger Bar feel that if you want the ultimate burger experience, the Burger Bar is your place.

If you are looking for a great burger, but don’t want to drive to the Strip, then you are a member of Team LBS.  LBS: A Burger Joint, located in Red Rock Station, offers a choice of meat (beef, turkey or veggie) and a smaller, but still respectable, choice of toppings.  Team LBS points out another benefit of their favorite burger place: it’s close to a Ben and Jerry’s (also located in Red Rock Station).  This is a purely theoretical argument since no member has ever had room left for ice cream after eating the gigantic burgers at LBS, but they wanted it stated for the record anyways.

Where to get the best burger is a debate that might never be settled among The Coffman Team, but we are always on the look-out for new and better places.  Perhaps there is a burger out there that will unite the team.  I’ll keep you updated!

4th of July Parade

July 5th, 2009 bohannon Posted in Summerlin Comments Off

From school children riding bikes with training wheels attached to Kerry’s Marine Corp Riders on their motorcycles, from horse-drawn wagons to Segways, from Native American Dancers to Storm Troopers, the Summerlin Patriotic Parade is not only a Vegas tradition, but a perfect example of the city‘s diversity. The Coffman Team (less Kerry, who was negotiating the parade route very slowly – since his motorcycle club had to keep pace behind the aforementioned bike-peddling children), had a great time cheering from the sidelines as babies in parent-pulled wagons to retired military veterans went by in their red-white-and-blue best.

National Trails Day

June 23rd, 2009 bohannon Posted in Events, Outdoor Recreation, Summerlin, Uncategorized Comments Off

National Trails Day was celebrated on June 6th this year, with approximately 3,000 trail-themed events across the country designed to promote awareness and appreciation for America’s trails. With its 150-mile trail system, Summerlin was a natural fit for the day. Summerlin’s Happy Trail Family Fun Walk and Run

Fun walkers enjoyed games at the halfway point.

featured a 1.6 mile fun walk through the Arbors Paseo Park trail system with a stop at the mid-way point for some water balloon tossing, sack races and other activities and games. Those looking for more of a challenge could enjoy a 9-mile fun run (I am not kidding you, the Summerlin Striders, a Summerlin-based running club, was referring to it as a “fun” run. Just shows that people’s definition of fun varies widely).

The Summerlin Trail System features several types of planned trails in its extensive system, including natural, village and bike trails. For more information and a map of the trail system, visit www.summerlin.com.

Summerlin Snow Day

February 5th, 2009 bohannon Posted in Events, Interesting, Outdoor Recreation, Summerlin, Things to Do, las vegas Comments Off

The Coffman Team recently enjoyed a long-standing Summerlin tradition – the 15th annual Summerlin Snow Day.  Every year, roughly 7 tons of crushed ice transforms the sloped area of Arbors Park into a snow hill for sledders of all ages.  Hot chocolate and cookies are available to make the winter wonderland complete.  This year’s Snow Day was a complete success, judging from the number of young sledders I heard proclaiming it “awesome,” one young man even going so far as to call it “the best day of my life!”  The Snow Day is pretty awesome, and a not-to-be-missed event for Summerlin residents.

Summerlin Pumpkin Festival

October 17th, 2008 bohannon Posted in Events, Interesting, Outdoor Recreation, Summerlin, Things to Do, las vegas Comments Off

The Coffman Team braved the cold to attend the 2nd annual Summerlin Pumpkin Festival. In addition to picking out the perfect pumpkin, the festival offered face painting, fortune telling, petting-zoo petting, game playing, craft making and scarecrow decorating. There was also a farmer’s market, with lots of fresh produce, baked goods, roasted corn-on-the-cob, and goodies to be had (and yes, a funnel cake booth!).

Summerlin, Nevada – A Master Planned Las Vegas Community Offering Many Amenities

April 22nd, 2008 bohannon Posted in Outdoor Recreation, Summerlin, Things to Do Comments Off

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley just near the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the community of Summerlin, Nevada.  Summerlin is a planned community originally purchased and run by Howard Hughes in the 1950s and named after his grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin.  Hughes obtained the land as the Hughes Tool Company which later became the Summa Corporation.  Much of the land was acquired for as little as twenty-five cents an acre as it was thought to have no use.  The Summa Corporation’s land holdings continued to grow over time and thus the two main areas, Summerlin North and South, were conceived.

Red Rock Country Club - Image courtesy of www.redrockcountryclub.comSummerlin is actually contained within two locales, the City of Las Vegas and Clark County Nevada.  The area is generally divided into North, South, West and Centre.  There are many villages in each locale which contain a variety of gated, non-gated and age-restricted communities.  Summerlin is highlighted by wonderful pocket parks (there are over 100) and scenic rest stops that showcase the stunning natural beauty of the area.  Community members can be found biking and golfing or playing tennis, soccer and even chess in the park.  There are also many village community centers throughout the area to enjoy.  Golf is of course a big attraction for Summerlin – there are at least nine courses in the area.

The Red Rock Country Club Community is home to two of those spectacular courses – the private Mountain Course and the public Arroyo Course.  Both courses are Arnold Palmer designed signature courses which players of all levels can enjoy.  The natural beauty of the surroundings in this community are unmatched.  At the Red Rock Country Club you are sure to have a world-class golf experience.
